Jim's Post

My first cell phone was an OKI 700. It was unique in the fact that whiles everyone was running around with a Motorola “beige brick,” mine was a “black brick.” Back in those days, innovations in cell phone technology were slow, but you knew something big would eventually happen. Fast forward to today, and in the space of a month, we've seen three different products, the iPhone, Samsung’s F700, and LG's new Prada phone. Forget convenience, safety, and productivity, now it’s about fashion and entertainment.

Technology Around the World

The thing I love most about technology is that it has allowed me to walk away from my desk. For me, working with different artists around the world makes my job seem a lot less like work.

I can keep in touch with my office via email or IM. Now with VOIP technology, I can listen in and give input on a session happening on the other side of the globe. Next month, I will be listening in on a session in Toronto, Canada from my hotel room in Tokyo, Japan, crazy. Really crazy because the session will be starting at 3am Tokyo time.

And even if I cannot "sit in" on a session, the producer can instantly post a full fidelity audio file via iDisk or Digidelivery. Here is a link to Digidelivery so you can check it out:

You can also make high quality recordings just about anyplace in the world. Sometimes, an artist is on location and we have to bring the recording tecnology to them. Just last year, I had to travel to an artist who was working on a film in a distant location. Luck for me, he was working in the Bahamas. The photo at the top of this post is me on the set of his movie. Some film about pirates. So, if you ever make it to Grand Bahama Island, I can recommend La Dolce Vita for a wonderful dinner. Check out more of the Port Lucaya area which is where I stayed on the island.

Techology is changing drastically in ways that will give lives a fighting chance to survive. With the findings of paper thin biodegradable implants that will eliminate the use of tearing down one's body through chemothearpy. With the thin film it is used to fight various types of cancers. The film is inserted directly to the area in which the cancer or tumor has been growing or removed.

Have you all heard about Microsoft's SharePoint software? It is a really cool application that is marketed towards corporations as a communication and collaboration tool.

Microsoft just released Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, wich is a major upgrade from their last version; 2.0. The new version is packed with features. According to Microsoft, this application can used to:

  1. Broadcast Information with Blogs: New features include posting via the Web, e-mail, or directly from Microsoft Office Word 2007; archive views; and Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds.

  2. Capture Community Knowledge with Wikis: Wikis are great tools to capture knowledge. Based on a “group editing” model, wikis encourage everyone to contribute. Wikis can be used as forums to brainstorm ideas, manage knowledge bases, create designs or instruction guides, or simply gather information in an easy-to-edit format. WYSIWYG and rich-text formatting enhance the editing experience.

  3. Manage Document Metadata with Content Types: Content types enable documents with different metadata attributes to be stored in the same library. These attributes can be accessed and managed from Windows SharePoint Services as well as 2007 Microsoft Office system programs, such as Word, Microsoft Office Excel®, and Microsoft Office PowerPoint®.

  4. Gantt Chart View: Task, issue, and project issue list data can now be viewed graphically, giving team members an at-a-glance indicator of a project’s current status.

  5. Predefined Workspaces: Teams can share documents, manage schedules, and stay connected.

  6. Create Surveys, Discussions, and Links: Take advantage of these collaboration features to connect with team members, partners, and customers. Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 adds new survey features including conditional branching and page breaks.

  7. Calendars: New calendar views and recurring events added in Windows

  8. Additional Workspace Types: Meeting workspaces, Issue tracking, Project tracking, Blogs/wikis

  9. People and Groups: The People and Groups list provides a unified place to find, communicate with, and manage people and their permissions. People Picker control provides a consistent user experience throughout the site for selecting people or groups.

  10. Tree View and Breadcrumbs: New user interface (UI) elements help users identify where they are within a SharePoint site.

  11. Presence Awareness: Helps identify when team members are online.

We use SharePoint 2.0 at my work, but are just now starting a pilot to test 3.0. I am very excited about the new features and have volunteered my team to participate in the pilot so I can play with the new version before we roll it out to the Enterprise.

Computer Dreams

My computer is slow and bulky. I've been dreaming of a new laptop with a wireless card so I can go places and be online, like my favorite coffee place: Starbucks.

I've been researching laptops and saving my money, and when I have enough, I plan to buy this beauty:

The MacBook Pro with an Intel Core 2 Processor. It's going to take me a while to save up the money to buy it, but when I do I will be so happy!!! I'll be able to download pictures and music, and also do my University of Phoenix homework. I'll also be able to chat with friends and share pictures with them.

I'm very excited about my impending purchase, and I can't wait to get rid of this giant 21-inch monitor that currently takes up my entire computer desk. My new laptop will be sleek and shiny!

Welcome!
